Transforming the Heart of Luke Mortimer’s Family Kitchen
In the heart of Skipton, we had the privilege of helping the Mortimer family create a kitchen that’s as inspiring as their story.
Seven year old Luke Mortimer is a keen rugby player whose life changed dramatically after losing his hands and legs below the knee to meningococcal meningitis. After 23 surgeries and five months in hospital, Luke finally came home, and his family began transforming their space to suit their new way of living.
We were proud to play a part in this journey, supplying and fitting Silestone Quartz worktops, splashbacks, and a large island that now form the centre of their beautiful, functional family kitchen.
Designing a Kitchen Around Luke’s Needs
When the Mortimers came to us, their main goal was to create a kitchen that worked for everyone, especially Luke. It needed to be practical and accessible, without losing the warmth and style of a family home.
We worked closely with them and their kitchen designer to make sure the layout and materials supported those needs. One of the clever touches is the use of push to open drawers, which remove the need for handles and make it easier for Luke to access things independently.
These small but meaningful details have made a real difference for the whole family, giving Luke more freedom while keeping the kitchen comfortable and welcoming for everyday life.
The Heart of the Home
We used Silestone Quartz throughout the kitchen for its durability and easy maintenance, perfect for a busy household. The sleek countertops and matching splashbacks look great and can handle anything family life throws at them, from hot pans to spills.
At the centre of it all sits a large island, which quickly became the main gathering spot in the home. It’s used for everything from cooking and homework to chatting about the day. Most importantly, it’s a space where Luke can be right in the middle of family life, just as it should be.
More Than Just a Kitchen
For the Mortimer family, this kitchen is about much more than design, it’s about independence, togetherness, and creating a space that fits their life perfectly.
Luke’s dad, Adam, told us:
“It’s amazing to have Luke back home, and we’re learning how to adjust to our new normal as a family. This kitchen has made such a difference. It’s allowed us to continue living life together, and it feels like the heart of our home.”
Hearing that means everything to us. We’re proud to have been part of their journey and to know our work helped make daily life that little bit easier.
