Planning Cut-Outs for Your Kitchen Island
A kitchen island is often the centrepiece of a home, a place where you socialise or have your morning coffee. Whether you’re adding a sink, hob, or tap, or simply ensuring your space has all the necessary features, careful planning of your island’s cut-outs is essential. The goal is to make your island both functional and beautifully finished, without compromising the integrity of your stone surface.
Why Planning Cut-Outs Matters
Cut-outs in your worktop are necessary for a variety of fittings, from sinks and hobs to taps, pop-up sockets, and even integrated appliances such as a wine cooler. Each one needs to be measured and fabricated precisely to maintain the strength and appearance of the material.
When working with natural stone or engineered surfaces like Granite, Quartz, Quartzite, or Dekton, precision is key. Poorly measured or uneven cuts can lead to a weak spot resulting in cracking, chipping, or alignment issues later on.
That’s why at Meridian Granite, our experienced fabricators use the latest CNC machines to ensure 100% accuracy. Ensuring a perfect fit, smooth finish, and long lasting durability.
Sink Cut-Outs
Including a sink in your island is a practical and popular choice, creating a central point for food prep and cleaning.
Undermount sinks are often favoured for islands, as they sit neatly below the surface, creating a seamless finish and making it easy to wipe water or crumbs straight into the sink.
Top-mount sinks sit on top of the worktop and can work well in more traditional kitchens or where a defined edge detail is preferred.
Every sink cut-out is carefully shaped and polished to match your chosen sink model, ensuring a watertight fit that complements the overall design.
Hob Cut-Outs
If your island doubles as a cooking area, your hob placement requires equal attention. Each hob manufacturer has precise specifications for the cut-out size and spacing, so accuracy during fabrication is critical.
When adding a hob to an island, it’s also important to consider:
- Ventilation: Downdraft extractors or overhead hoods may be required to manage steam and odours.
- Spacing: Allow enough room between the hob and sink to keep food prep areas practical and safe.
The right positioning ensures your kitchen not only looks great but also functions efficiently.
Our fitters at Meridian will always ask to see your hob when they come out to template. They will note down the exact size, confirm with you the location and it will be sent to our factory to be precisely cut with our CNC machine. Therefore it is important to have this on site when we come to template your kitchen.
Tap & Accessory Cut-Outs
Taps, water filters, and soap dispensers all require smaller but equally important cut-outs. The location of these fittings should support your daily workflow while maintaining symmetry across the island.
Each hole is drilled with our CNC machine, so ensure a snug fit preventing moisture damage to the stone or cabinetry below.
Power Points & Other Features
While not the main focus, power outlets are often incorporated into islands for added convenience. These can be:
- Installed discreetly on the side panels
- Hidden under the overhang
- Or integrated through pop-up sockets for a clean finish
Other features like wine coolers, downdraft vents, and appliance drawers also require carefully planned cut-outs to ensure everything fits seamlessly within your design.

Every cut-out, polish, and edge detail plays a role in achieving a flawless result. At Meridian Granite, our skilled team combines years of experience with industry leading technology to ensure each island is fabricated to perfection. Delivering the highest quality in the industry.
